Social Networking

I think it makes great sense for libraries to create profiles on places like My Space and Facebook. My younger brother is 23 and relies heavily on both of his accounts -- he mainly uses it to stay in contact with his friends, but I think would be much more inclined to actually read updates for things like library programs via this media. I doubt he would even read email updates we sent as much as he would a bulletin post or something posted on the library's profile.

Having a profile has the added bonus of allowing people to learn about our programs because they notice it on a friend's profile which isn't possible through any other communication streams.

It would be great if My Space or Facebook did create a special type of account for organizations that allowed for posting but somehow gave the sense that if you do add us to your friends list we're not going to be poking around your profile and looking over your shoulder.
